Located just 40 minutes northeast of Athens and 110 miles from Atlanta, Elberton is nestled on the South Carolina border and surrounded by Hart, Lincoln, Madison, Oglethorpe, and Wilkes counties.
Elberton boasts a unified rail system, a public airport, a historic downtown area, and beautifully preserved Antebellum homes. Visitors can delve into the rich history of the granite industry at the Elberton Granite Museum & Exhibit, which offers historical exhibits, artifacts, and educational displays. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Jim-Ree African American Museum in the former Elbert County Jail to explore the history of African Americans in Northeast Georgia. The Elbert County Courthouse, with its striking red-brick architecture and bright-white cupola, and the art-deco Elbert Theatre are also must-sees.
While you’re in town, take a stroll along the Granite City Walking Trail, which leads to various local attractions like the Granite Bowl—a historic football stadium constructed from 100,000 tons of blue granite—and McWilliams Memorial Park. For a touch of history, visit the Nancy Hart Cabin, where the revolutionary patriot helped capture British Tories as a colonial spy.
Nature lovers will enjoy a stay at Richard B. Russell State Park, just 15 minutes east of town, where you can rent a cottage and enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, and golfing. If you prefer a touch of luxury, consider booking a room at The Samuel Elbert Hotel, a 1925 Tudor-style building that was restored to its original glory in 2016.
Elberton is also known for its historic Elbert Theatre, where you can catch a movie, watch a play, or participate in one of the many events planned throughout the year. And while the Georgia Guidestones were once a notable attraction here, they were recently destroyed.
As someone with deep roots in this area—I have family members who grew up here—I can tell you that Elberton offers a unique blend of rural charm and community spirit. Located just 20 minutes from Hartwell, Elberton is a rural community where agriculture plays a significant role in the local economy, alongside the thriving granite industry.
While Elberton may not have an abundance of big-name stores (outside of Walmart, CVS, and Ingles), its quaint downtown area and slower pace offer a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life. One of the biggest annual attractions is the Elbert County Fair, a beloved tradition that has been around for generations—my mom, now in her 60s, still reminisces about her childhood experiences at the fair, and now my children look forward to it every year.
Exploring Real Estate in Elberton
Before we dive into details about local jobs and schools, let’s take a look at some of the neighborhoods and see what your money can get you in terms of housing in Elberton.
If you’re moving from a major city where the cost of living is high, Elberton offers incredible value for your money. For example, homes in town typically range from $150k to $300k, depending on factors like square footage, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and acreage. Many homes here feature colonial-style architecture, reflecting the town’s rich history and the pride locals take in preserving its character.
While Elberton may not have a true small-business-owned coffee shop, you can still get your caffeine fix at the Starbucks inside Ingles or Dunkin’ Donuts. Personally, I’m a fan of Starbucks’ chai tea, so I’ll be grabbing one before we continue our tour!
In terms of the local job market, Elberton’s economy is heavily centered around the granite industry, agriculture, and manufacturing. Many residents also commute to nearby Athens, just 35 minutes away, which offers a vibrant college town atmosphere with plenty of entertainment, dining, shopping, and job opportunities.
As for schools, Elberton has one primary school, one learning center, one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. If you’re interested in homeschooling or private education, there are also options available in nearby counties.
For those with a larger budget, Elberton offers even more possibilities. For $400k to $1 million, you could purchase land with poultry houses or a spacious 5,000+ square-foot home on a significant amount of acreage.
The Best-Kept Secret of Elberton
Now, as promised, I’m going to share with you one of Elberton’s coolest secrets: Lake Russell. This stunning lake, along with the Russell Dam, serves the community and offers a unique experience compared to other lakes in the surrounding counties. Unlike many lakes, Lake Russell is a conservation lake, meaning the shoreline is protected from development. While you may find lakefront homes here, they won’t have docks, offering a serene and unspoiled natural environment that’s hard to find elsewhere.
